Abortion Providers Targets of Two Attempted Bombings and Twenty-Nine Anthrax Threats in Last Three Days

Statement of Vickie Saporta, Executive Director of the National Abortion Federation

On January 3, two abortion clinics in Ohio received packages containing bombs. In both cases, clinic staff notified law enforcement officials that they had received suspicious packages, and no one was injured. At the same time that we feel relief for the staff and patients at those clinics, we are outraged that the violence persists. It is unconscionable that extremists opposed to a woman's right to choose continue to resort to violence and intimidation to advance their agenda.

We have also confirmed that since Monday, at least twenty-nine abortion clinics in twenty-two states have received letters claiming to contain anthrax. While none of the letters so far have been found to contain anthrax, NAF is continuing to alert our clinics as we receive updates from law enforcement officials. We are urging our clinics to be on heightened alert for any suspicious letters or packages. Anthrax threats can frequently disrupt the provision of abortion services, as well as monopolize the resources of law enforcement officials.

We have been in constant communication with local and federal law enforcement officials over the last few days, including the FBI, Department of Justice and members of the Task Force on Violence Against Reproductive Health Care Providers. We greatly appreciate their quick response and cooperation, and will continue to work with them to see that those responsible for these criminal acts are brought to justice.
