American Women Increasingly Demand Access to Early Abortion with RU-486 (Mifepristone)

Nation's Only Toll-Free Abortion Hotline Records High Proportion of Calls from Women Seeking Medical Abortion

Washington, DC - As final FDA approval of mifepristone approaches, more and more American women are seeking information about early abortion with mifepristone, according to the National Abortion Federation. "Over the last several months we have experienced a dramatic increase in the number of women calling our Hotline about mifepristone," said Vicki Saporta, Executive Director of the National Abortion Federation (NAF). "We expect this number will only increase as we get closer to final FDA approval. As the only national toll-free hotline providing information and referrals to qualified abortion providers, we're prepared to answer a high volume of calls over the months to come."

"At this point, about one in five of the calls we receive on our Hotline are from women seeking information about medical abortion," said Saporta. "Most of these callers also want a referral to a qualified provider of medical abortion in their area. We currently have more than 100 member clinics offering early medical abortion with methotrexate, and we expect a majority of our members to provide mifepristone abortions after final FDA approval is granted. Women who call our Hotline are assured that they will be referred to qualified abortion providers, since our member clinics are rigorously screened for compliance with the highest quality standards."

"Our experience with American women overwhelmingly shows that they want access to this safe early abortion option," said Saporta. "Final FDA approval of mifepristone, and the victory of medicine over politics that it will represent, is long overdue."

The National Abortion Federation Hotline has been providing women in the United States and Canada with non-biased, factual information about abortion and referrals to qualified abortion providers for more than 20 years. With bi-lingual operators, the Hotline also assists low-income women with referrals to funding sources and provides case management for women in difficult situations. It is open Monday through Friday, 9 am - 7 pm EST, at 1-800-772-9100 in the United States and 1-800-424-2280 in Canada.

The National Abortion Federation is the professional association of abortion providers in the U.S. and Canada dedicated to ensuring that abortion remains safe, legal and accessible.
