Supreme Court Agrees to Hear Nebraska "Partial-Birth Abortion" Ban Case

Statement of Vicki Saporta, Executive Director, National Abortion Federation

The National Abortion Federation welcomes the Supreme Court's announcement today that it will review Nebraska's so-called "partial-birth abortion" ban.

The Nebraska ban, like others that have been passed around the country, is so vague that it would outlaw the most commonly provided abortion procedures. It lacks an exception to protect the health of the woman, and it would place physicians in prison for exercising their best medical judgment about the well-being of their patient.

These bans represent nothing more than an attempt to outlaw all abortion for American women. We are confident that the Supreme Court will confirm this conclusion.

Women and families deserve the right to make their own personal, medical decisions in consultation with their physicians. Their health care has been used as a political tool by those who oppose that right for too long. We look forward to the Supreme Court's ruling this summer, putting an end to the wasteful use of legislators' time and taxpayer money that has been spent to push legislation similar to Nebraska's flawed law through 30 state houses in recent years.
