National Abortion Federation Commemorates 27th Anniversary of Safe, Legal Abortion for American Women

Washington, DC - The National Abortion Federation credited Saturday's anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade with saving the lives of thousands of American women. "Before the Roe v. Wade decision legalized abortion, women who made the choice to have an abortion routinely jeopardized their lives to seek that care," said Vicki Saporta, Executive Director. "Today, thanks to the decision in Roe v. Wade, American women now have access to a full range of reproductive health care services, including abortion, under the care of compassionate, highly qualified medical professionals."

"With the imminent FDA approval of RU-486, or the early option pill, women facing unintended pregnancies will have another safe option for early abortion," continued Saporta. "The National Abortion Federation is proud to be leading the efforts to educate physicians who plan to offer this option to their patients. And, our national toll-free Hotline is ready to refer women seeking a mifepristone abortion to a qualified provider in their area. Finally, American women will have access to medical technology that women in Europe have used safely for more than a decade."

"Roe v. Wade also guaranteed a woman's ability to make her own personal reproductive health care decisions. We are confident that the Supreme Court's decision later this year on attempts to ban abortion in Nebraska will uphold that right," continued Saporta.

"Women deserve to have access to safe medical care, free from the interference of politicians and those who would like to make their decisions for them. At the same time that we celebrate all that the Roe v. Wade decision has done to improve the lives and health of American women, we must also remain vigilant in opposing attempts to take this fundamental freedom away."
