Judge Decides in Favor of Abortion Provider in North Dakota and Rules That Abortion and Breast Cancer Link is Unproven

Statement of Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of the National Abortion Federation

Washington, DC - We applaud the judge's ruling today in North Dakota. This decision, in addition to the dismissal of a similar case in California earlier this month, exposes the latest strategy of those who oppose a woman's right to choose: frighten women with medical misinformation while claiming disingenuously to be concerned with women's health.

For a number of years, the National Abortion Federation has joined other organizations such as the American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute, and National Breast Cancer Coalition in informing women that the scientific evidence does not support a link between abortion and an increased risk of later development of breast cancer.

We will continue to work to ensure that women facing an unintended pregnancy have the accurate information they need to make the choices that are right for them. At this moment, state legislators across the country are considering laws that would require abortion providers to inform women of a link between abortion and breast cancer although no such link has been scientifically established. We hope that this case will serve as a reminder to legislators that sound science, and not politics, should be the basis of the provider-patient relationship.

The National Abortion Federation published a fact sheet in 1999 refuting a link between abortion and breast cancer.
