National Abortion Federation Urges Congress to Close Bankruptcy Loophole and Protect Abortion Providers from Anti-Choice Criminal Activity

Statement of Vicki Saporta, President and CEO

Senate and House conferees currently have an opportunity to work together to ensure that those who break the law are held accountable for their actions. The Schumer-Hatch amendment, contrary to assertions of Rep. Hyde and others, would not stop legal, peaceful protest. What it would do is protect patients and reproductive health care providers from criminal activities by anti-choice extremists, and prevent further abuses of the bankruptcy code.

We commend Senator Schumer for his commitment to ensuring that those who break the law are held accountable. The National Abortion Federation has been documenting incidents of violence and disruption against abortion providers for over twenty years, and we know that when illegal acts are not punished, they escalate into more extreme forms of violence. The current laws that protect abortion providers from harassing, threatening activity are hollow if extremists believe they can escape justice by exploiting the loophole in the bankruptcy code.

We call on legislators, regardless of their position on a woman's right to choose abortion, to put politics aside and help protect the health care professionals who risk their lives to provide legal reproductive health care services to women. We urge them to support the Schumer-Hatch amendment, and once and for all send this critical piece of legislation to the President for his signature.

The National Abortion Federation is the professional association of abortion providers in the U.S. and Canada dedicated to ensuring that abortion remains safe, legal and accessible.
