National Abortion Federation Commends Senate Judiciary Committee for Rejecting the Nomination of Priscilla Owen to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals

Statement of Vicki Saporta, President & CEO of the National Abortion Federation

Today the Senate Judiciary Committee voted down the nomination of Priscilla Owen to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. The National Abortion Federation (NAF) applauds the ten members of the Committee who stood with women around the country and opposed this nomination. Throughout her tenure on the Texas Supreme Court, Owen demonstrated a troubling record of judicial activism and bias against reproductive rights. Owen consistently disregarded her role as an impartial judge in furtherance of her own personal anti-choice ideology.

The defeat of the nomination of Priscilla Owen ensures that her "judicial activism" will not endanger the lives and health of women who live in the three states covered by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. The women in Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana deserve to have a judge who will preserve, not take away, their right to make their own reproductive health care decisions without government interference.

We hope that the defeat of Priscilla Owen, like the defeat of Charles Pickering, will again send the message to President Bush that Americans do not want judges confirmed to lifetime appointments whose views are outside those of mainstream America.
