On First Monday National Abortion Federation Announces Support of NOW in Scheidler v. NOW

Statement of Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of the National Abortion Federation

Washington, DC - This Monday begins the new session of the Supreme Court of the United States. One of the major issues that will face the Court is curbing violence against abortion providers in Scheidler v. National Organization for Women (NOW). The National Abortion Federation (NAF), along with several other organizations, has signed on to an amicus brief in support of NOW.

NAF has been collecting statistics on anti-choice violence and disruption for almost twenty-five years. In the last ten years there have been 7 murders, 15 attempted murders, 14 bombings, 84 arsons, 41 attempted arsons and bombings, 53 assaults, 273 death threats, 1 kidnapping, 439 trespasses, 444 stalkings, 48 burglaries, 692 acts of vandalism, 100 butyric acid attacks and 654 anthrax threats.

We know that when illegal acts are not punished, they escalate into more extreme forms of violence. We must, therefore, remain vigilant in our efforts to protect abortion providers and the women they serve from harm by anti-choice extremists. It is imperative that the Supreme Court uphold the ruling of the Seventh Circuit in NOW v. Scheidler to ensure that women are able to safely exercise their constitutional right to legal abortion care.

The National Abortion Federation is the professional association of abortion providers in the U.S. and Canada dedicated to ensuring that abortion remains safe, legal and accessible.
