Coinciding with the Second Anniversary of the FDA's Approval of Mifepristone (RU-486), National Abortion Federation Launches First Online Interactive Education Program

Program Offers Accredited Continuing Medical Education (CME) to Health Care Professionals

Washington, DC - The National Abortion Federation (NAF) has launched the first interactive online CME program which enables health care providers to learn more about mifepristone (RU-486). The online program is available at www.EarlyOptions.org and will allow health care providers to earn up to five hours in Category I credit towards the American Medical Association's Physician Recognition Award. "We are pleased to provide this excellent educational resource to health care professionals who want to learn more about this safe, early option," said Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of NAF.

The new Early Options CME Online Program contains five modules which focus on medical abortion regimens, management of side effects and complications, counseling, ultrasound, and service delivery issues. The online program additionally includes interactive questions and video clips from NAF's Early Options Video Education Series featuring expert medical abortion providers and women who have had a medical abortion.

"The launch of the Early Options CME Online Program is just one more step that NAF is taking to continue to educate health care providers in the provision of abortion care, including the administration of mifepristone," stated Saporta. NAF is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Since January 2000 NAF has educated nearly 4400 health care professionals in the safe and effective use of medical abortion.

In September 2000 the FDA approved mifepristone as an early abortion option. "Coinciding with this two-year anniversary, NAF is continuing to provide the latest evidence-based educational resources to health care professionals in order to ensure that they are able to provide the highest quality reproductive health care to women," concluded Saporta.
