National Abortion Federation Urges Maximum Sentence for Associates of Convicted Murderer James Kopp

Statement of Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of the National Abortion Federation

Washington, DC - Just a few months ago James Kopp was convicted of and given the maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison for the murder of Dr. Barnett Slepian, an ob/gyn and abortion provider. Two people who helped Kopp during his time as a fugitive, Loretta Marra and Dennis Malvasi, will be sentenced tomorrow for their crime of harboring a fugitive. The National Abortion Federation has written the court to urge that it impose the maximum sentence on Marra and Malvasi.

Marra and Malvasi are part of an organized, underground network of anti-choice terrorists who will use any tactic, including murder, to close abortion clinics. Violence against abortion providers will not end until we shut this network down. The court must send a strong message to the entire network that helping someone commit murder or escape from law enforcement is unacceptable and will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

The National Abortion Federation is the professional association of abortion providers in the U.S. and Canada dedicated to ensuring that abortion remains safe, legal and accessible.
