National Abortion Federation Prepared to File Suit As House Again Acts to Jeopardize the Lives and Health of Women

Statement of Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of the National Abortion Federation

Washington, DC - The House of Representatives is slated today to again pass a ban on safe abortion procedures. The minor changes made in the conference report do not make the bill constitutional, despite the claims of the bill's proponents. The bill still suffers from the same two flaws as the Nebraska statute struck down by the Supreme Court in Stenberg v. Carhart: it does not include an exception to protect a woman's health and its language remains so vague that the ban would prohibit more than one abortion procedure, including the safest and most common methods provided after 12 weeks of pregnancy and well before fetal viability.

Women's lives and health should not depend on political agendas. NAF will continue our fight to safeguard the lives and health of women and to ensure that health care decisions are made by medical professionals.

Congress is poised to send the legislation to the President's desk for his signature. The National Abortion Federation (NAF), represented by the ACLU, will immediately file suit in federal court to block the enforcement of this dangerous and unconstitutional ban.

NAF members care for more than half the women who choose abortion each year in the United States, many of whom would be affected by this flawed legislation. On behalf of our members and their patients, we thank the members of the House who voted against this bill. We commend their sustained efforts to stand up to protect women's health and the ability of doctors to continue to make appropriate medical decisions.

The National Abortion Federation is the professional association of abortion providers in the U.S. and Canada dedicated to ensuring that abortion remains safe, legal and accessible.
