National Abortion Federation Hopes to Obtain Injunction against Dangerous Abortion Ban after Day in Court

Statement of Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of the National Abortion Federation

New York, NY - The National Abortion Federation (NAF) has fought for eight years in the halls of Congress to block this ban on safe abortion procedures. Our commitment to safeguarding women's lives and health by protecting doctors' ability to make sound medical decisions has brought us today from the Capitol to the courthouse.

Congress cannot be allowed to practice medicine without a license. We are hopeful the court will recognize that it is health care professionals - not politicians - who should make medical decisions.

As the organization whose members care for more than half of the women who choose abortion each year in the United States, we remain determined to prevent this law from being enforced. Our members include health care professionals at clinics, doctor's offices, and hospitals, including premier teaching hospitals.

This law would force doctors to choose between exercising their best medical judgment, or going to jail. Treating doctors as criminals for providing women with safe, high-quality abortion care cannot be tolerated.

With representation by the ACLU, we will work to block enforcement of this dangerous law. We must not allow women's health to be compromised by politicians who are unqualified to make medical decisions. The lives and health of women depend on it.
