Alleged Plot to Bomb Abortion Clinics Thwarted

National Abortion Federation Grateful to Law Enforcement Officials

Washington, DC - The National Abortion Federation today expressed gratitude to law enforcement officials who late Tuesday night captured and arrested a man suspected of planning to bomb abortion clinics across the country.

"Our nation has a long and troubled history of violent attacks against abortion providers. In recent months NAF has been concerned that another wave of violence against abortion providers was a strong possibility," said Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of the National Abortion Federation (NAF). "Last night's arrest underscores the chilling reality that violent extremists are willing to go to any lengths to block women's access to safe abortion services."

The arrest last night of Stephen John Jordi in Miami Beach, Florida was the result of work by the U.S. Joint Terrorism Task Force, the FBI, local police and the Coast Guard. Jordi is scheduled to appear in a Miami federal court this morning.

"It takes a strong commitment from law enforcement in order to capture these criminals," Saporta said. "We thank all the officers whose hard work helps to prevent violence against abortion providers."

For more than 25 years, the National Abortion Federation (NAF) has compiled statistics on violence and disruption against abortion providers. NAF's database is the most comprehensive of its kind and enables us to detect changes in the patterns and trends in anti-choice violence.
