National Abortion Federation Condemns Recess Appointment of Pickering

Statement of Vicki Saporta, President of the National Abortion Federation

Washington, DC - The National Abortion Federation is outraged that President Bush today chose to bypass the Senate and use a recess appointment to place Charles Pickering on the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. We have fought Pickering's nomination for over two years because extreme ideologues do not belong in the federal judiciary, where they have broad power to take away the fundamental rights and freedoms of Americans. Our reservations about Pickering's egregious anti-choice record still stand. This recess appointment is yet another example of President Bush's ongoing assault on women's reproductive freedom. Women and families in Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana deserve better from our system of justice and from our President.

The National Abortion Federation is the professional association of abortion providers in the U.S. and Canada dedicated to ensuring that abortion remains safe, legal and accessible.
