National Abortion Federation Denounces President Bush's Recess Appointment of Bill Pryor to Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals

Statement of Vicki Saporta, President of the National Abortion Federation

The nomination of Alabama Attorney General Bill Pryor to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals has long been opposed by a broad range of Americans. His radical agenda stands in such sharp contrast to the values shared by mainstream Americans that his nomination has twice been blocked by the Senate. Ignoring this fact, Bush capitalized on a short congressional recess in an attempt to pack the courts with yet another extreme ideologue.

Bill Pryor is opposed to abortion even in cases of rape or incest and has called Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion, "the worst abomination of constitutional law in our history." He also openly disparaged Supreme Court Justice Souter for not using his seat on the Court to further the political agenda of the President who nominated him. Bush's recess appointment of a man who is so unfit to serve as a fair and impartial judge will further undermine public confidence in our judicial system.

Bush's decision to wait until late on a Friday afternoon to announce this recess appointment - a time when events often receive little media attention - is itself an acknowledgement that the American people do not share Pryor's extreme views.
