National Abortion Federation Decries Administration's Latest Attack On A Woman's Right to Choose

Statement of Vicki Saporta, NAF President and CEO, on President Bush's Signing Law Granting Legal Rights to Fetuses

This bill does nothing to protect women from violence-instead, it is designed to establish a precedent that could be used to take away a woman's right to choose.

This is the second time in six months that Congress has passed and the president has signed a law that would undermine abortion rights. NAF and our doctors are in court today fighting President Bush and Attorney General Ashcroft's attempt to impose a sweeping federal abortion ban. The federal ban was created on the pretense that it prohibits a single procedure used late in pregnancy-when in reality it targets abortions provided as early as 13 weeks in pregnancy, and encompasses a wide range of abortions that doctors say are safe and among the best to preserve women's health.

The bill President Bush has signed into law today is yet another example of the misleading tactics that opponents of a woman's right to choose are willing to employ. The bill's supporters claim they are trying to protect women from violence, yet they refused to allow any real violence prevention measures, or even aid to victims, into the bill.

Women who are victims of violence deserve better from Congress and their President. It is time for politicians to stop playing games with women's lives and health.
