National Abortion Federation Calls for Congressional Investigation into FDA's Rejection of Over-The-Counter Emergency Contraception

Statement of Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of the National Abortion Federation

The National Abortion Federation is extremely dismayed that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) bowed to political pressure and disregarded the expertise of its staff, its own advisory committee's recommendations, and historical precedent to deny women over-the-counter access to emergency contraception.

The FDA must base its rulings on science - not politics. It is unconscionable that the governmental body tasked with making scientific decisions acted against clear scientific evidence. We must not allow the FDA to be politicized and pressured into disregarding science in order to satisfy the political agendas of certain members of Congress.

Emergency contraception is safe and most effective in preventing pregnancy if used within 72 hours of unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. Emergency contraception must be available over the counter so that women have the timely access necessary to prevent unintended pregnancy.

We join members of Congress and other women's health and advocacy organizations in calling for a Congressional investigation into the FDA's ruling. Women deserve for their health care options to be shaped by science - not politics.

The National Abortion Federation is the professional association of abortion providers in the U.S. and Canada dedicated to ensuring that abortion remains safe, legal and accessible.
