Statement of Vicki Saporta, NAF President and CEO, on the Senate Nuclear Option Deal

After a long battle, Senators have reached a bipartisan agreement to avert the "nuclear option." While Senate rules and the filibuster remain intact, we are deeply disappointed that this agreement left open the possibility of confirmations of the three worst nominees for women's issues, particularly a woman's right to choose.

Priscilla Owen, Janice Rogers Brown, and William Pryor are not fit for lifetime appointments to the appellate courts. The filibuster was an appropriate means to block their appointments, and we are disappointed that Senators have chosen to compromise the rights of men and women who will be affected for years to come by the extreme views and beliefs of these nominees. We continue to urge Senators to vote against their confirmations.

Under the agreement, Senators may still use their discretion to filibuster future judicial nominees, including Supreme Court nominees, under "extraordinary circumstances." NAF believes that "extraordinary circumstances" exist for any nominee who would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade and fully expect that the filibuster would be used to oppose such an extreme nominee.
