Today's Supreme Court Ruling a Victory for Women's Health and Safety

In a decision released this morning in Ayotte v. Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, the Supreme Court unanimously recognized and upheld its own precedent that abortion laws must protect women's health and well-being. The opinion was written by Sandra Day O'Connor.

"Today's Supreme Court ruling is a victory for women's health and safety," said Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of the National Abortion Federation. "The Supreme Court again recognized that when restricting abortion, women's health and safety must remain paramount."

The New Hampshire law that required minors to notify their parents at least 48 hours before obtaining an abortion did not include an exception in cases where the minor's health was at risk. The law potentially endangers teens who need an abortion in medical emergencies but are unable to notify their parents. The Supreme Court sent the case back to the lower court to determine if the state legislature would have passed the law with a health exception. If not, the court agreed that the law should be struck down.

"We continue to believe that this law should be struck down," said Saporta. "The New Hampshire legislature specifically rejected an exception for medical emergencies when it passed the legislation. As the Court ruled today, politicians must continue to ensure that women's health and safety are protected."
