The National Abortion Federation Thanks Senators Who Voted Against Cloture on Supreme Court Nominee Samuel Alito

Statement of Vicki Saporta, NAF President and CEO:

The National Abortion Federation thanks Senators who voted against closing debate on the nomination of Samuel Alito. Even though he will be confirmed tomorrow, the 25 Senators who supported a filibuster recognized that confirming Alito to the Supreme Court would have dire consequences for the lives and health of American women. We appreciate the Senators who stood up for women's reproductive freedom and tried to defeat Alito's nomination.

The Senate shouldn't rubber-stamp Supreme Court nominees. Senators who voted no on cloture were doing their job and should be applauded. They clearly knew that Alito was the wrong person to fill Sandra Day O'Connor's seat.

We can only hope that the Court continues to honor Roe v. Wade as established precedent. Two thirds of Americans want to see Roe upheld and will not tolerate returning to the days of back-alley abortions when women had to sacrifice their lives and health to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.

The National Abortion Federation (NAF) is the professional association of abortion providers in the United States and Canada. Our mission is to ensure safe, legal, and accessible abortion care to promote health and justice for women. Our members include health care professionals at clinics, doctors' offices, and hospitals, who together care for more than half the women in both countries who choose abortion each year.
