The National Abortion Federation Condemns Louisiana Abortion Ban

Washington, DC - Reacting to Saturday's action by Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco signing into law a bill that would ban almost all abortions in the state, Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of the National Abortion Federation, called the law "an attempt by Louisiana politicians to deny women necessary reproductive health care."

The law can only take effect if the U.S. Constitution is amended to allow states to ban abortion or if the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down Roe v. Wade.

"This law is a near-total ban on abortion and attempts to limit the medical choices of Louisiana women and criminalize the care given by Louisiana health care providers. For more than 30 years, Roe v. Wade has protected the lives and health of American women. However, anti-choice, politically motivated legislators in Louisiana have seen fit to emulate South Dakota and waste taxpayer resources to further policies that endanger women's lives and health.

"Louisiana officials should not deny women necessary reproductive health care, and endanger the lives and health of women to advance their own political agendas. Citizens in Louisiana will not tolerate a return to the days of back-alley abortions when women had to sacrifice their lives and health to end an unwanted pregnancy. It is more important than ever that we continue to protect women's reproductive freedom for future generations."
