The National Abortion Federation Condemns the President's Veto of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act

Washington, DC - The National Abortion Federation (NAF) condemns President Bush's decision today to veto the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. which would expand federal funding for promising medical research. This legislation passed both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate with strong bi-partisan support, and was also supported by a majority of Americans. The President's veto reflects a decision to put politics above the lives and health of millions of Americans.

NAF supports embryonic stem cell research, which has the potential to help find new treatments, or even cures, for those individuals suffering from degenerative diseases such as cancer, diabetes, Parkinson's, ALS, and Alzheimer's. We applaud the Congress's passage of this bill, and we urge President Bush to reconsider his decision to play political games with potentially life-saving medical research.

The National Abortion Federation (NAF) is the professional association of abortion providers in the United States and Canada. Our mission is to ensure safe, legal, and accessible abortion care to promote health and justice for women.
