Shannon Rio, FNP, Honored by the National Abortion Federation

Saporta: Shannon is an inspiration and pioneer for Nurse Practitioners nationally and a true unsung hero.

Washington, DC - The National Abortion Federation (NAF) presented a 2007 C. Lalor Burdick Award to Shannon Rio, FNP, during NAF's Annual Meeting. The Burdick Award honors "unsung heroes" whose outstanding daily commitment to excellence exemplifies the ideals of NAF's members.

"Shannon is an inspiration and pioneer for Nurse Practitioners nationally and a true unsung hero," said Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of the National Abortion Federation when presenting the award to Rio.

For several years Rio has been offering abortion care, which has greatly increased access for women throughout rural Southern Oregon. In early 2006, the state Board of Nursing received an anonymous professional complaint that Shannon's provision of manual aspiration abortions was outside the scope of practice of a Family Nurse Practitioner. Rio fought the challenge and won. The Board of Nursing voted in her favor to allow her to continue to provide aspiration abortion care.

"Shannon has set a precedent for Nurse Practitioners nationwide - that abortion is integral to providing comprehensive, patient-centered care," said Saporta. "This is essential as women - especially in rural areas - continue to face challenges when accessing abortion care."
