National Abortion Federation Releases Report on Symposium Commemorating R v. Morgentaler

Recently, the National Abortion Federation (NAF) released Of What Difference? Reflections on the Judgment and Abortion in Canada Today, a report from our symposium to celebrate the 20th anniversary of R v. Morgentaler, the Supreme Court case which decriminalized abortion in Canada. NAF co-sponsored the symposium with the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law, and with generous support from the Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy.

The symposium brought together more than 100 participants, including legal scholars, abortion providers, journalists, and representatives from government and women's advocacy organizations. Participants examined abortion from a variety of perspectives and addressed the significance of the Morgentaler decision, and the differences it has made for women, providers, and the politics of Canada.

"R v. Morgentaler has undoubtedly protected the health and saved the lives of countless women, and was named as one of the most important and influential Charter cases of the last 25 years," said Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of NAF. "This symposium featured insightful presentations and reflections on this landmark decision."

Of What Difference?, prepared in collaboration with the Women's Health Research Institute, is a compilation of the day's presentations. The report is available online at www.prochoice.org (PDF file, 793K).

The National Abortion Federation (NAF) is the professional association of abortion providers in Canada and the United States. Our mission is to ensure safe, legal, and accessible abortion care to promote health and justice for women. Our members include health care professionals at clinics, doctors' offices, and hospitals, who together care for more than half the women in both countries who choose abortion each year.
