Media Associate

The National Abortion Federation (NAF), the leading pro-choice organization representing abortion providers and their patients, has an immediate full-time opening for the position of Media Associate. The ideal candidate will have experience developing and implementing media outreach strategies, be comfortable and successful at pitching to reporters and other media professionals, and be a social media superstar.

Duties:

  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with reporters, editors, producers, bloggers, and other media professionals to increase NAF’s visibility and ensure the voices of abortion providers and women who choose abortion are included in public debates;
  • Develop and pitch story ideas, respond to press inquiries, and arrange interviews for senior NAF staff;
  • Develop and execute successful short and long-term media outreach strategies;
  • Prepare, review, and copyedit press releases, op/eds, letters to the editor, and other communications materials;
  • Manage all aspects of our social media, including developing and implementing coordinated campaigns;
  • Oversee NAF’s Patient Partnership program, which helps women who have chosen abortion share their stories with the media, legislators, and the public;
  • Assist in media training of abortion providers and patients, including messaging and interview preparation; and
  • Manage process for collecting daily news clips.

Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to a woman's right to choose abortion care;
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or a related field;
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of media relations and communications experience, with a proven ability to pitch and place stories;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
  • Strong writing and editing skills; ability to produce original, clear, concise talking points, press releases, and letters to the editor within tight deadlines;
  • Strong copyediting skills and attention to detail;
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a very collaborative team;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; and

Director of Accredited Continuing Medical Education

The National Abortion Federation (NAF), the leading pro-choice organization representing abortion providers and their patients, has an immediate full-time opening for the position of Director of Accredited Continuing Medical Education.

 

NAF is a 501(c)(3) organization, dedicated to ensuring that abortion is safe, legal, and accessible. Our members include 400 clinics, hospitals and physicians’ offices in the United States, Canada, Colombia, and Mexico City. Our dynamic and innovative programs span a wide range of services designed to meet the unique needs of abortion providers and their patients. NAF’s programs include accredited continuing medical education; quality assurance and improvement; clinic security and law enforcement education; clinical, legal, and consumer publications; public education; and public policy advocacy.

 

The Director of Accredited Continuing Medical Education is responsible for one of NAF’s most important and visible programs. The Director:

  • Supervises all aspects of the design, development, presentation, and evaluation of NAF’s Annual Meeting for over 850 attendees, and three Regional Workshops for up to 75-300 attendees, across the US, Canada, Colombia, and Mexico City;
  • Collaboratively works with NAF staff and volunteer committees to develop ACCME-accredited, abortion-specific, continuing medical education opportunities including planning their educational content and selecting and securing faculty;
  • Develops meeting materials;
  • Maintains NAF’s compliance with ACCME accreditation requirements, including ensuring appropriate documentation, year-end reporting, self studies, and activity files, and handling the reaccreditation process;
  • Conducts facility site visits during site selection process;
  • Negotiates contracts with hotels and conference facilities;
  • Supervises the Training & Education Coordinator’s handling of conference logistics, registration, conference publications, and promotional materials;
  • Supervises the Training & Education Coordinator’s compilation of evaluations and distribution of CME credits to attendees;
  • Oversees and facilitates the development and accreditation of webinars and other educational and training activities;
  • Oversees and conducts abortion values clarification and options counseling workshops;
  • Develops and edits educational materials, curricula, and syllabi; and
  • Supervises the day-to-day work of NAF’s Training & Education Coordinator and seasonal intern.

The Director of Accredited Continuing Medical Education works closely with the President and CEO; VP, CFO/COO; Senior Communications & Membership Director; Security Director; Medical Director, General Counsel and Senior Policy Director; Group Purchasing Manager; and other staff. This position requires frequent interaction with the Medical Education Committee of the Board, NAF membership, and leaders in the medical community. A high energy level and a strong commitment to women’s health and abortion rights are essential. The ideal candidate will be experienced/knowledgeable about continuing medical education, ACCME accreditation requirements, adult education/adult learning theory; conference planning, including hotel contract negotiations; program evaluation; and issues involving abortion care delivery and reproductive health.


Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to a woman’s right to choose abortion;
  • Minimum of 5 years related professional experience;
  • Minimum of 3 years in continuing medical education and accreditation;
  • Minimum of 3 years in meeting or conference planning;
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, manage, and prioritize diverse and detailed tasks;
  • Familiarity with abortion care delivery; clinical experience is helpful;
  • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills;

Training and Education Coordinator

The Training and Education Coordinator will report to the NAF Director of Accredited Continuing Medical Education, work closely with the NAF President & CEO; NAF VP, CFO & COO; and in concert with other NAF staff.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Handle logistics of Annual Meeting for approximately 800 attendees including doctors, other clinicians, medical students, counselors, administrators, researchers, and advocates;
  • Handle logistics of three annual Regional Workshops for 75-300 attendees including doctors, other clinicians, medical students, counselors, administrators, and advocates;
  • Handle logistics of three annual Board of Directors meetings;
  • Negotiate vendor contracts for meetings;
  • Assist the Director of Accredited Continuing Medical Education with negotiations with hotel/meeting sites regarding contract provisions including food and beverage minimums and room blocks;
  • Assist the Director of Accredited Continuing Medical Education with site visits during site selection and meeting planning process;
  • Conduct all aspects of registration including pre-registration, website management, and onsite registration;
  • Coordinate all pre-conference meeting logistics including floor plans, room set-up, A/V requirements, banquet selections, and shipping materials;
  • Coordinate onsite hotel meeting logistics;
  • Develop and manage food and beverage budgets;
  • Coordinate logistics for faculty, staff, and Board of Directors for meetings; and
  • Track continuing medical education credits for medical professionals.

Duties:

  • Manage bidding process and coordinate production of electronic syllabus and preliminary/final programs, including contracting with designer and printer;
  • Manage bidding process for and purchase badges, lanyards, and USBs for meetings;
  • Research restaurants and make reservations for Board Dinners;
  • Adhere to strict meeting deadlines for all meeting related activities;
  • Develop and compile meeting evaluations; and
  • Maintain NAF meetings data.

Access and Training Coordinator

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Staff the Clinicians for Choice (CFC) program, which supports the greater involvement of nurses, certified nurse-midwives, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants in all aspects of abortion care;
  • Organize and implement CFC Day and other CFC activities at NAF’s Annual Meeting;
  • Conduct outreach to APCs and providers who serve the reproductive health needs of women in diverse communities;
  • Work with coalition partners to market the Advanced Practice Clinicians (APC) Toolkit, and conduct further training and outreach to communities supporting APCs;
  • Increase participation in CFC activities;
  • Develop new resources for members regarding residency and other training programs;
  • Actively assist with the placement of students, residents, and clinicians at facilities to receive hands-on clinical training in abortion care;
  • Match facilities seeking employees with clinicians seeking permanent and temporary work, including traveling clinicians; and
  • Develop and conduct values clarification and options counseling workshops at medical schools and health conferences.

Duties:

  • Manage all aspects of CFC program including leading quarterly conference calls, working with Advisory Committee members, managing and distributing news via the listserv, increasing membership in CFC, and conducting CFC-hosted clinical webinars for members;
  • Plan and implement program to increase abortion education and training in CNM, NP, and PA programs and at professional conferences;
  • Serve as NAF liaison with Advanced Practice Clinicians Working Group to develop strategies to address state policies regarding APC scope of practice;
  • Act as primary liaison with organizations that address reproductive rights and health for women from diverse communities;
  • Coordinate the selection process for the Elizabeth Karlin Award recipient;
  • Assist with NAF Annual Meeting preparations, including handling faculty responses and helping with registration; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Receptionist and Office Assistant

The Web Designer/Developer manages all aspects of NAF’s websites from the concept to design, development, testing, SEO optimization, quality assurance, and delivery. This position is also responsible for the management of online tools used to recruit and cultivate activists and donors and to run advocacy campaigns online (e.g., email marketing and web content management systems, constituent databases, survey tools, and social networking and blogging platforms).

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Designing, developing, and supporting NAF websites and mobile websites.

Hotline Operators

The NAF Hotline Fund has immediate openings for Hotline Operators, both full- and part-time both weekdays and evenings/weekends. Those who can offer services in French or Spanish are strongly encouraged to apply.

The NAF Hotline Fund is a 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to providing accurate, unbiased reproductive health care information to women from diverse backgrounds and to providing callers with confidential consultation and referrals to providers of quality abortion care. The Hotline Fund also provides case management services to women with special needs and limited financial assistance to subsidize care for low-income women. The Hotline provides services in English, Spanish, and French.

 

Duties

Hotline Operators provide callers with unbiased, factual information about pregnancy and abortion and referrals to providers of quality care. Hotline Operators ensure accurate assessment of eligibility for funding assistance and accurate and complete documentation for eligible women. Other duties include data entry assistance and administrative tasks as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

Candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to a woman’s right to choose abortion and understanding of women’s complex social and financial situations. Candidates should also have excellent written and oral communications skills and be able to work cooperatively with women and their families, abortion providers, and staff. Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree; and be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Candidates should have strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and experience with databases. Proficiency in French and/or Spanish is preferred. Bachelor’s degrees in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology or entry level experience in counseling preferred.

Clinic Defense and Research Intern

NAF's Clinic Defense and Research Department works with member clinics to improve security and assist clinic staff in dealing with threats and violence. The department also works with law enforcement officials to improve relationships between law enforcement and clinics, deter violence against abortion providers and pursue and prosecute those responsible for committing acts of violence. In addition, the department produces a monthly newsletter on incidents of violence against clinics and maintains a database of incidents of violence and disruption.

Duties Include:

  • Gathering and organizing information on anti-abortion extremists
  • Entering and compiling statistics on violence and disruption against abortion providers
  • Maintaining database of law enforcement contacts
  • Assisting in a wide range of projects as needed

Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of undergraduate work with 3.0 GPA or above

NAF's Communications Intern will work in the Communications Department, which:

Training and Education Intern

The T&E Intern reports to NAF’s Director of Training and Education and works in concert with the Training and Education Coordinator and Meeting Manager.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform research and data entry for specific projects;
  • Compile and analyze evaluation data;
  • Assist in meeting planning duties for NAF conferences; and
  • Assist in other projects as needed.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong commitment to a woman's right to choose;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, data entry, attention to detail, and a desire to gain research and international conference planning experience;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
  • Background in women's studies, sociology, public health, or communications.
  • Previous research experience is a plus, but not required.
  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus, but not required.

Hours:

This internship is located in our DC office. Typically, the internship is a full-time, 12 week placement; however scheduling is negotiable. Compensation includes a small stipend and/or academic credit.
