The most common way to provide a planned gift to help ensure NAF's future vitality and effectiveness is to include NAF in your will through a bequest. Other ways to help NAF plan for the future are to name NAF as the beneficiary of your retirement fund or your existing or new life insurance policy, or through life income gifts.

Bequests

Your attorney can easily revise your will or add an amendment to your existing will to include NAF. The language to accomplish your purpose may be a simple as: "I give the sum of $_____ (or____% of the value of my estate) to the National Abortion Federation, now or formerly at 1660 L Street, NW, Suite 450, Washington, DC 20036."

As your attorney will advise, you may arrange a gift of a specific amount, a percentage, or a portion of the residual of your estate; or you may bequeath real estate or personal property to NAF. Please let us know if you have included NAF in your will to help us plan for the future.

Life Insurance and Retirement Plans

There are various methods by which a life insurance policy may be contributed to NAF. A donor may:

  1. assign irrevocably a paid up policy to the National Abortion Federation;
  2. assign irrevocably a life insurance policy on which premiums remain to be paid by the donor; or
  3. name the National Abortion Federation as a primary or successor beneficiary of the proceeds.

On the beneficiary section or form, give NAF's legal name (National Abortion Federation), address (1660 L Street, NW, Suite 450, Washington, DC 20036) and NAF's Employer Identification Number (43-1097957).

You may also designate NAF as a beneficiary of your retirement plan.

Charitable Remainder Trust

A Charitable Remainder Trust is a separately administered irrevocable trust established by the donor. It provides for immediate tax benefits in the U.S. as well as payments to you and/or other named beneficiary(ies) either for life or a term of years (not to exceed twenty), whereupon the remaining trust assets are distributed to NAF.

Charitable Lead Trust

A Charitable Lead Trust is a trust in which the income, or "lead" interest, is paid to NAF, and the "remainder" interest is given to one or more non-charitable beneficiaries, who could be either the donor or family members. The amount paid to NAF may be either a fixed sum (an "annuity trust" interest) or a percentage of trust assets as valued each year (a "unitrust" interest).

Charitable Gift Annuity

The Charitable Gift Annuity is a contract between the institution and the donor. The institution agrees to pay the donor (or other person named by the donor) a lifetime annuity in return for a gift of cash, securities, or other property. The annual payment is a fixed sum, the amount of which is based on the size of the gift and the number and ages of the beneficiaries.

Endowed Funds

You may establish an endowed fund in your name or in honor of someone else with an outright or planned gift of $25,000 or more. The income from the endowed funds provides annual income in perpetuity. The income will be used by NAF where the need is greatest, unless the donor chooses to work with NAF to develop a named program fund.

Real Estate

You may transfer the title of a personal residence to NAF. The donor or another person will retain use of the property for a term of years or for the life of the donor and/or another person. Generally, the donor shall continue to be responsible for real-estate taxes, insurance, utilities, and maintenance after transferring title of the property to NAF.

Please consult either your financial or legal advisor to help you arrange a planned gift that may provide advantages to you or your family, in addition to supporting the work of the National Abortion Federation. NAF would be happy to provide a copy of our planned giving policies and guidelines upon request.

Planned giving benefits and arrangements in Canada will differ.
